Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU)-Tikait faction held a panchayat at Sisauli in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday. After the meeting, which was attended by BKU members from several states, the union’s national spokesperson, Rakesh Tikait, said, “We want govt to fulfill farmers’ demands in one or two days, or else, a daylong ‘dharna’ will be held in Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and UP on Feb 21.” Slamming govt’s “high-handedness”, Tikait said all the BKU members condemned govt’s action at Shambhu border. He added: “We also decided that Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) should give a call to park tractors on all highways leading to Delhi on Feb 26-27, so that farmers could leave for Delhi on a short notice.” He further said, “We’ll inform SKM about today’s discussion. Tractors will remain parked on one side of the highway. Commuters and locals should not face any inconvenience. People should know the farmers are protesting for them. And, of course, if asked to march to Delhi, the farmers would do so. We’re planning to hold a meeting in Delhi, tentatively scheduled on March 14.” Besides Haridwar in Uttarakhand, districts in UP that came up for discussion for the “tractor march” were Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Amroha, Moradabad, and Hapur. Addressing the farmers, Tikait said, “This govt works only for industrialists and capitalists. If you want to save your farm lands, then you need to agitate again… Fuel up your tractors and be prepared to spend a year’s earning. Just think that there was no crop for one year. We’re not politicians, we’ve nothing to do with politics, we’ll sacrifice for farmers; we’ll stand with farmers till our last breath.”
