The Delhi High Court has adjourned the hearing of seven suspended BJP MLAs till tomorrow after being informed of further developments in the case. A counsel for the Delhi Assembly Speaker suggested that the controversy could be put to rest if the MLAs met and apologized for their actions. The court asked the MLAs’ counsel to take instructions on this suggestion. The MLAs have been suspended for allegedly causing disruptions during an address by the Lt. Governor. The High Court was supposed to hear arguments for interim relief, as the MLAs have been suspended for an indefinite period. However, the matter was adjourned until tomorrow. The petitioner MLAs, represented by Senior advocate Jayant Mehta and Advocates Neeraj and Satya Ranjan Swain, argued that the MLAs should not be suspended for an indefinite period and that there should be a graded punishment system in place. They also mentioned that the Supreme Court has previously stated that a member cannot be suspended for an indefinite period. The High Court asked if the rules were violated and whether the matter can be heard while the privilege committee is investigating. The bench pointed out that there is a limitation to interference with the affairs of the assembly. The Senior advocate representing the MLAs requested permission for the MLAs to attend the session, as it was a budget session. The High Court listed the matter for tomorrow to hear arguments on interim relief. The motion for suspension of the BJP MLAs was introduced by AAP MLA Dilip Pandey and passed by a voice vote. The suspension came after the MLAs allegedly disturbed the assembly during an address by the Lt. Governor. The MLAs’ Senior advocate, Jayant Mehta, argued that the suspension is punishment as it does not allow the MLAs to participate as members of the assembly. He mentioned that the MLAs should be allowed to attend the session, as it is a budget session. The High Court listed the matter for tomorrow to hear arguments on interim relief. The Delhi BJP MLAs, who were suspended for the remainder of the Budget session of the Delhi Assembly, have moved to the Delhi High Court to challenge the decision of their suspension. The suspension has affected their right to participate in the proceedings, according to their Senior advocate. The session began with the Lt. Governor outlining the government’s policies, programmes, and achievements. However, the MLAs reportedly interrupted the speech, leading to their suspension. The matter will be further heard by the court.
