Europe’s biggest online fashion retailer, Zalando, has committed to overhaul the sustainability claims it makes on its websites. The European Union (EU) qualified these claims as misleading, and the European Commission has called for revisions. Zalando will create two detailed pages on its web platforms, focusing on product standards and the company’s sustainability strategies. The retailer will ensure that its claims are verifiable and have a significant environmental impact. It will remove sustainability flags and environment-related icons displayed next to its products. Instead, Zalando will provide clear information about the percentage of recycled materials used. This commitment follows dialogue with the Commission and national consumer authorities. Zalando will address the EU’s request for information as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The company is among 16 other platforms, including Google and Meta Platforms, that were asked to provide more details on measures taken to give researchers access to relevant data for countering illegal online content and goods. Zalando had previously sued the EU over its VLOP designation.
