Four Catholic priests from Mumbai are currently under observation in the ICU of Holy Family Hospital, Bandra, following an accident. The priests, Fr Nelson Machado, Fr Denzil Fernandes, Fr Santan Fernandes, and Fr Pascal Sinor, were returning to Mumbai from Nashik after attending the ordination of Bishop Barthol Barretto. They are affiliated with St Francis Xavier Church, Vile Parle (W) and St Anthony’s Vakola. The accident occurred on Saturday, and the priests are being closely monitored due to the head injuries they sustained. Archbishop of Bombay, Oswald Cardinal Gracias, who presided over the ordination, reached Mumbai separately and is awaiting further updates on the priests’ condition. Fr Nigel Barrett, spokesman of the Archdiocese, confirmed that all the priests are conscious and stable but require 48 hours of observation as per the standard protocol. A medical update will be provided once available from the hospital. Fr Calistus Fernandes of Victoria Church, Mahim, visited the injured on Sunday morning and stated that Fr Denzil is under observation for internal head injury, while Fr Nelson, despite his head injury, was able to recognize him. Fr Santan was also conscious, while Fr Pascal was resting and appeared to be fine. Melwyn Fernandes, the secretary of the Association of Concerned Christians, expressed sadness at the news and offered prayers for the quick recovery of the priests, hoping that they would soon be able to serve the community again.
