Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, is going to get elected as the first woman chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province on Monday. The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PMLN) and its allies have clinched both speaker and deputy speaker offices in the Punjab Assembly. Maryam Nawaz, 50, will be contesting against Rana Aftab Ahmad of Imran Khan’s PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) nominee for the Chief Minister office. In a secret ballot, PML-N leader Malik Ahmad Khan and Zaheer Iqbal Channar were elected as custodian and deputy custodian of the house. The PML-N candidates were backed by their allies, the PPP, Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q), and the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP). The election for the Chief Minister office will take place tomorrow.
