During the pandemic, property consultant Ashok Narang faced the issue of transfer fees when he wanted to sell his family flat in a newly constructed building in Borivli, Mumbai. The builder demanded Rs 1,000/sqft to transfer the flat, which Narang and many others challenged in court and won. Transfer fees, which can be as high as 2% of the transaction value, are a common practice in Mumbai. However, legal experts argue that these fees are an unfair way of extracting money from sellers and have called for societies to collect funds through general body resolutions instead.
