Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman Shahjahan Sheikh has been suspended from the party for six years. Sheikh, who held the position of party convenor for the Sandeshkhali assembly constituency in West Bengal, was accused of sexual abuse and land grab in the area. The decision to suspend him came after his arrest following 55 days on the run. During this period, the area witnessed violent protests, primarily led by women. Sheikh’s arrest took place at a house in Bamanpukur, around 30 km away from Sandeshkhali. He was hiding there with a few associates.
The suspension of Sheikh Shahjahan is seen as a crucial move by the Trinamool Congress as it deals with the fallout from the incident. The party aims to address concerns about its image and reputation, especially in the backdrop of a political tussle with the BJP in West Bengal. Both parties have been using such incidents to score points against each other.
Sheikh’s arrest came after the Calcutta High Court stated that the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), or the West Bengal Police can arrest him. He was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting, attempt to murder, and robbery, in connection with assault on ED officers during a raid at his house. The court’s directive paved the way for his arrest by the West Bengal Police, which had faced criticism for not apprehending him earlier.
The arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan was celebrated in Sandeshkhali, with locals distributing sweets. Governor CV Ananda Bose welcomed the arrest, expressing hope that it would put an end to the cycle of violence in Bengal. The opposition parties, including BJP, CPI(M), and Congress, have raised questions about the timing of the arrest and alleged political motives behind it.
With Sheikh’s suspension, the Trinamool Congress is attempting to send a strong message that it does not tolerate individuals facing serious charges. The party’s leadership stressed that they have always taken decisive action in such cases. TMC leader Derek O’Brien, in a press conference, also challenged the BJP to suspend leaders who are facing corruption and criminal cases.
The suspension of Sheikh Shahjahan for six years is expected to have significant implications for the Trinamool Congress. It comes at a time when the party is grappling with the reputation damage caused by the accusations against Sheikh. The Trinamool Congress aims to rebuild its image and regain the trust of the people in West Bengal. The political tussle between the Trinamool Congress and BJP in the state has further intensified, with each party using such incidents to gain an advantage over the other.
As Sheikh Shahjahan faces legal proceedings, the Trinamool Congress will have to navigate through the challenges ahead. The party will also have to address concerns about its handling of the situation and ensure justice for the victims of sexual abuse and land grab. The future course of action taken by the party will shape its image and reputation among the people of West Bengal.
