The Zoological Survey of India named a new marine species of head-shield sea slug with ruby red spot after President Droupadi Murmu. This species, Melanochlamys droupadi, was discovered from the coast of West Bengal and Odisha. It is the first of its kind found anywhere in the world. The species is characterised by its short, blunt and cylindrical body and a smooth dorsal surface with two dorsal shields. The species was confirmed by examination of morphological, anatomical and molecular characteristics. Melanochlamys droupadi is a small invertebrate with a maximum length of up to 7 mm, brownish black in colour with a ruby red spot in the hind end. It has a shell inside the body and is a hermaphrodite. The sea slug is normally found crawling on the intertidal zone, leaving crawl marks behind them in the sandy beaches. The reproduction of these sea slugs apparently occurs between November and January. The type specimens were deposited in Marine Aquarium and Regional Centre, Digha and Estuarine Biology and Regional Centre, Gopalpur.
