Calcutta HC’s Port Blair circuit bench has upheld that the word ‘darling’ has a sexual connotation and it is considered an offensive remark under IPC Section 354A(1) (iv). The ruling came in response to an appeal by Janak Ram, who was earlier sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for using the word ‘darling’ while addressing a lady head constable. The remark was made in the Mayabunder police station area of Andamans on October 21, 2015, during a police raid.
