Google is developing a new feature called Satellite SOS for its Pixel phones that enables users to message emergency services and share their location even without a cell phone or WiFi signal. This feature appears to be similar to Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite introduced in 2022 with the iPhone 14 series. The Satellite SOS feature can be accessed in the Settings under Safety & Emergency. It seems that the feature was mistakenly rolled out to Pixel phones through a recent update to Adaptive Connectivity Services. When selecting Satellite SOS, it provides an explanation of its functionality. Users will be able to call or text 911 and other emergency numbers via satellites when there is no cell or WiFi signal. Additionally, they can share their precise location using Google Maps and provide details about the type of emergency they are experiencing. The feature shares the user’s name, phone number, email, and emergency contact information with emergency services, as well as their location and phone model. This sharing of information aids emergency services in identifying the user and their location. The settings for Satellite SOS suggest that the feature will have global support, with a support page listing the countries where it is available. The settings also mention a partnership with Garmin for global emergency response. Presently, the feature’s demo options are not functional, indicating that Google is still in the process of finalizing it before the official release. Google had previously promised satellite support for Android phones, and it appears that Pixel phones will be the first to receive the Satellite SOS feature. It is likely that Google will announce the feature at an upcoming Pixel event. While the timing suggests Pixel phones will have access to Satellite SOS before other Android devices, its importance for safety might prompt Google to make it available widely. With the presence of the Satellite SOS settings on Pixel phones, a launch can be expected in the near future. However, Google has yet to disclose the specific Pixel models that will support this feature, the regions where it will be operational, its cost, and the official release date.
