Pakistan’s newly-elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif mistakenly referred to himself as the ‘leader of the opposition’ during his victory speech in the National Assembly. Shehbaz Sharif became the prime minister after a consensus between Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Shehbaz’s rival Omar Ayub Khan, supported by Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), received only 92 votes. The recently concluded general elections have been marred by allegations of mass vote rigging, with PTI accusing several PML-N and PPP candidates of winning despite not receiving the most votes. Shehbaz will take oath on Monday at Aiwan-e-Sadr. Shehbaz previously served as prime minister in a coalition government from April 2022 to August 2023 during Nawaz Sharif’s exile in London.
