The fate of the popular mobile game, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), is reportedly under scrutiny in India. According to a report, the Union government’s cybersecurity division has recommended discontinuing the BGMI app due to concerns over potential cyber threats and compromise of national security. The report mentions the entry of a Pakistani national, Seema Haider, into India and crimes linked to the game. Authorities are worried that data collected through BGMI could be used for cyberattacks, posing a risk to the country’s security. The Ministry of Home Affairs has communicated these concerns to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, highlighting violations that could lead to cyber threats and targeted cyberattacks on Indian users. Seema Haider’s illegal entry into India and a teenager killing his mother over a dispute related to the game have raised red flags. The government has sent a detailed query to BGMI publisher Krafton and awaits the company’s response. Krafton, a South Korea based company, is expected to present its case and propose additional security measures at a crucial meeting next week. The final decision on the fate of BGMI in India will be made after reviewing these measures and the concerns raised by the central agencies.
