Nearly 24 years after the success of Anthony Minghella’s film adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley, a new TV series titled Ripley is set to premiere on April 4, 2024, on Netflix. The series, based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel, follows the cunning con man Tom Ripley, played by Andrew Scott, who is hired to convince the wealthy son Dickie Greenleaf, portrayed by Johnny Flynn, to return home from Italy. However, Tom’s intentions become more complex as he becomes obsessed with Dickie and his luxurious lifestyle, leading to deceit, fraud, and murder.

The cast also includes Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, Dickie’s close friend and romantic interest. Eliot Sumner joins in a recurring role as a friend of Dickie who grows suspicious of Tom. John Malkovich is set to appear in an undisclosed role, adding to the intrigue of the series.

Filming took place in Italy, specifically in Rome and Venice, to stay true to the novel’s setting. Production originally planned for September 2020 but was delayed to 2021. Filming concluded in New York City, capturing the essence of 1960s New York.

All eight episodes of Ripley will be available for streaming on Netflix. The series was originally planned to air on Showtime but was shifted to Netflix due to Showtime’s integration into Paramount+. Netflix released a teaser trailer on January 22, 2024, followed by a full trailer on March 4, 2024, providing an extended look at the series. While described as a miniseries, there are plans to explore Patricia Highsmith’s other novels in the ‘Ripilad’ series, potentially extending the show beyond its initial season.
