Indian PM Modi, UK’s Sunak Renew Commitment to Trade Deal

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British counterpart Rishi Sunak have confirmed their dedication to achieving a new trade deal. The two leaders had a call on Tuesday to discuss the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between Britain and India, which have been ongoing for two years. However, with both countries set to hold national elections in 2024, the probability of reaching a deal before the elections seems uncertain. Despite some progress, British negotiators returned from India without an agreement on key issues last week. Trade Minister Kemi Badenoch has noted that the election in India is not a deadline for the deal. British ministers are willing to take the necessary time to strike the right deal, emphasizing the importance of reaching an ambitious outcome in goods and services. The leaders agreed to remain in close contact and look forward to further progress on trade talks.
