Leonid Volkov, former chief of staff and long-time aide of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, was the target of a vicious attack in Vilnius, Lithuania. On Tuesday, outside his house, Volkov was assaulted by an unidentified individual who broke a car window, sprayed tear gas in his eyes, and then proceeded to strike him with a hammer. The attack left Volkov with visible injuries, including a bruise on his forehead and blood from a leg wound. The assailants also caused damage to Volkov’s vehicle. The incident was confirmed by Navalny’s spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, who posted images showing Volkov’s injuries and the aftermath of the attack. Ivan Zhdanov, director of Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, stated that Volkov was attacked near his house, with his legs and arms being targeted. Zhdanov strongly condemned the incident and emphasized that it was a clear political attack. Lithuania’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, also the leader of the ruling party, called the assault shocking and ensured that authorities would investigate the matter thoroughly. The Lithuanian police have initiated an investigation into the incident after receiving information about a man being assaulted outside his residence. In response, security measures were implemented, with a pine forest near Volkov’s home being cordoned off and police officers conducting searches. It’s important to note that Volkov, along with other political associates of Navalny, had relocated to Lithuania after escaping from Russia. The Anti-Corruption Foundation, to which Volkov belongs, is known for its opposition to corruption and its advocacy for political change in Russia. The attack on Volkov underscores the dangerous atmosphere faced by those who challenge the current regime in Russia, even beyond its borders. As the investigation progresses, it is essential that the perpetrators are identified and held accountable for their crime. The international community should also condemn this attack, emphasizing the importance of protecting the safety and well-being of individuals advocating for political reform and transparency in Russia.
