Leonid Volkov, former chief of staff and long-time aide of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, was the target of a vicious attack in Vilnius, Lithuania. On Tuesday, outside his house, Volkov was assaulted by an unidentified individual who broke a car window, sprayed tear gas in his eyes, and then proceeded to strike him with a hammer. Lithuania’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, also the leader of the ruling party, called the assault shocking and ensured that authorities would investigate the matter thoroughly. In response, security measures were implemented, with a pine forest near Volkov’s home being cordoned off and police officers conducting searches.
