The Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu is likely to witness a high-stakes battle in the 2024 general elections. Reports suggest that the INDIA alliance, comprising various opposition parties, plans to field a single candidate from the seat to prevent the splitting of anti-BJP votes. Moreover, there are indications that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) and the Congress might refrain from announcing any candidate from Coimbatore. This move could provide the MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) with an opportunity to field a strong candidate to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the BJP is also expected to announce the name of a formidable candidate for the Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat.
The upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Coimbatore are expected to witness a contest between the INDIA alliance and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) may also field a candidate separately. Nevertheless, no party has officially announced its candidates for the seat as of now.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, P. R. Natarajan emerged victorious from the Coimbatore seat, securing over 1.7 lakh votes. He defeated the BJP’s C. P. Radhakrishnan, who received around 3.9 lakh votes. Worth noting is the fact that in the 2014 polls, the DMK’s K. Ganeshkumar secured third place, while the AIADMK’s P. Nagarajan emerged as the winner. In that election too, the BJP’s C. P. Radhakrishnan came in second, with a vote count similar to that of the 2019 elections.
