Having been a part of six Ranji Trophy title triumphs, Milind Rege’s heart beats well and truly for Mumbai. He was there at the Wankhede on Thursday when Ajinkya Rahane lifted the trophy to make it title no. 42 as Mumbai beat Vidarbha by 169 runs. That he was Cricket Advisor to the MCA makes this triumph sweeter for Rege who has also served as the chief selector of Mumbai. ‘How high do I rate this win? Having seen and played in six Ranji Trophy title-winning sides, I rate it highly. We were struggling to find the right combination early in the season as we had players going for India duty and had to find replacements. It was hard work being a Cricket Advisor. From June, we had 46 meetings,’ he says. Part of the reason the selection committee found it tough was that players like Sarfaraz Khan, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal were in and out of the side as they had to report for India duty.
