An Indian Naval warship intercepted the hijacked Malta-flagged tanker, MV Ruen, which was reportedly being used as a pirate ship for acts of piracy on high seas. The vessel was hijacked by Somali pirates on December 14. The Indian Navy stated that the vessel sailed out as a pirate ship towards conducting acts of piracy on high seas. On March 15, the vessel was intercepted by an Indian Navy warship. In self-defense and to counter piracy, the warship opens fire with minimal force necessary to neutralize the pirates’ threat. The pirates have been called upon to surrender and release the vessel and any civilians they may be holding. The Indian Navy reaffirms its commitment to maritime security and the safety of seafarers in the region. The Malta-flagged tanker with 18 crew members onboard had sent a distress call on December 14 after being boarded by unknown personnel. The Indian Navy had diverted aircraft and a warship to assist MV Ruen. On December 19, the Navy provided assistance in evacuating an injured crew member. Piracy has seen a resurgence in the Horn of Africa, coinciding with the volatile situation in the Red Sea.
