Orissa HC Adjourns Hearing on PIL Seeking Tabling of Report on Ratna Bhandar Missing Keys

The Orissa High Court has adjourned the hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that seeks the tabling of the report on the missing keys of Ratna Bhandar. The PIL, filed by social activist Jayant Kumar Dash, challenges the government’s secrecy over the report and demands transparency in the matter. The PIL states that the Ratna Bhandar, a treasury built in the 12th century, holds valuable jewelry and artifacts belonging to Lord Jagannath. The keys to the treasury have been missing since April 2018. In July 2018, a committee was formed to probe the disappearance of the keys and submit a report. However, the state government has not yet made the report public, claiming that it could affect the religious sentiments of the people. The PIL argues that the government’s secrecy goes against the principles of transparency and accountability. It further asserts that the people have the right to know the truth about the missing keys and the security of the treasury. The PIL demands that the court direct the state government to table the report and make it public. During the hearing, the court adjourned the matter to a later date for further arguments. The court’s decision has disappointed the PIL petitioner, who had hoped for a swift resolution and disclosure of the report.
