Indian Shrimp Industry Faces Labor and Environmental Issues

Noriko Kuwabara was excited to try a new recipe for crispy shrimp spring rolls she saw on social media. She headed to Costco’s frozen foods aisle and picked up a bag of shrimp from India, the largest supplier of shrimp to the United States. However, an investigation revealed that the industry in India is facing labor and environmental problems. Workers endure dangerous and abusive conditions in shrimp hatcheries and peeling sheds. The industry also pollutes water sources and damages ecosystems. Despite these issues, Indian shrimp is regularly sold in major U.S. stores like Walmart and Target. The story sheds light on the challenges of balancing affordable seafood with ethical and sustainable practices.
