India initiates anti-dumping probe into import of aluminium foil from China

The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), which functions under India’s commerce ministry, has initiated an anti-dumping probe into the import of aluminium foil from China. The investigation arm, DGTR, is investigating the alleged dumping of aluminium foil, which is commonly used for packaging purposes. This move comes after an application was filed by domestic players, alleging that the cheap imports from China are hurting the domestic industry. The probe will examine the period of April 2019 to March 2020 to assess the injury caused to the domestic industry due to dumping. The investigation by the DGTR will focus on various aspects, including the examination of the volume and price trends of imports, the competitiveness of the domestic industry, and the impact of the dumped imports on the domestic market. In case the investigation finds evidence of dumping and consequent injury to the domestic industry, the commerce ministry may impose anti-dumping duty on the imports from China. Such anti-dumping duties are levied to safeguard the interests of the domestic industry and to ensure fair trade practices. The move to investigate the alleged dumping of aluminium foil from China is seen as a step to protect and promote the domestic industry amidst rising concerns over unfair trade practices. The Indian government has been proactive in taking measures to curb unfair trade practices, including anti-dumping investigations and the imposition of duties on various products.
