India’s main opposition party, Congress, has received a notice from the Income Tax Department demanding an additional payment of 18.2 billion rupees ($218 million) in taxes. Congress views this as an attempt to financially weaken the party just weeks before the general elections. Ajay Maken, Congress treasurer, called it “tax terrorism” and stated that the party will challenge the demand in court. The elections are scheduled to take place in seven phases between April 19 and June 1, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to secure a third consecutive term. Congress has accused Modi of trying to cripple the party financially through the tax department. The Supreme Court is set to hear the case on April 1.
