Union Minister Piyush Goyal dismissed allegations on Thursday that the government is selectively targeting opposition leaders, asserting that wrongdoers will face the consequences of their actions. Goyal stated that investigative agencies, including the CBI and the Directorate of Enforcement, will carry out their duties without granting pardons to those who have committed wrongdoings. He addressed questions regarding the government’s use of central agencies against opposition leaders while sparing those affiliated with the BJP. The minister emphasized the government’s mission to establish a corruption-free India and the need to eradicate corruption. Goyal made these remarks during the Times Now Summit 2024 event. Recently, a delegation of leaders from the INDIA bloc parties approached the Election Commission of India, alleging the unlawful and biased deployment of central agencies by the ruling BJP to suppress opposition parties. The INDIA bloc leaders submitted evidence of instances where central agencies targeted opposition parties and claimed that a level playing field does not exist for the opposition. Goyal dismissed the opposition party’s allegation that the BJP is acting as a ‘washing machine’ and described it as irresponsible and baseless. He reiterated that all cases are being processed according to the law, and no one will be exempted from due legal procedures. Goyal also responded to a question about whether the BJP would welcome Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, into the party. He stated that the BJP is seeking individuals with substance who can add value to the party. Regarding the BJP’s target of securing 370 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Goyal expressed confidence and stated that achieving this goal is possible as long as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading. Goyal, who is a member of the Rajya Sabha, is contesting elections from Mumbai (North). The seven-phase elections are scheduled to commence on April 19.
