Having arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and BRS leader K Kavitha, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is likely to push for trial in the Delhi Excise scandal. The ED will file charge sheets against Kejriwal, Kavitha, and co-accused, and seek commencement of trial. Notably, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is likely to be implicated as an accused in the upcoming chargesheet, becoming the first political party to face charges of money laundering under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED will invoke section 70(1) of PMLA to make AAP an accused in the case. The federal agency alleges that AAP is the major beneficiary of the proceeds of crime generated in the Delhi liquor scandal, and part of these proceeds has been used in their election campaign for the Goa assembly in 2022. The agency intends to push for the trial to be concluded within a short period, aiming for a conviction of the accused. The Supreme Court had previously assured that the trial in the Delhi excise policy scandal would be concluded within six to eight months while dismissing Delhi’s former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s bail plea.
