Thailand’s Constitutional Court to Rule on Potential Dissolution of Move Forward Party

Thailand’s Constitutional Court has accepted a petition from the state Election Commission to hear a case against the Move Forward party. The party won the most seats in the 2023 election but now faces potential dissolution for allegedly violating the constitution. The court has instructed the party to present evidence in its defense within 15 days. Move Forward’s predecessor, the Future Forward party, was dissolved in 2020 for violating election laws. This move triggered a wave of pro-democracy protests, with protesters openly criticising the monarchy and demanding its reform. These protests prompted Move Forward to campaign for changes to the law that protects the monarchy from defamation. Party leader Chaithawat Tulathon stated that the party will seek to prove its innocence and that the verdict could be announced within weeks. Thailand’s courts, particularly the Constitutional Court, are seen as supporters of the country’s traditional royalist establishment, frequently issuing rulings to weaken or dismantle political opponents. The Move Forward party’s victory in the 2023 election indicated that many Thai voters desired change after years of military-controlled government. However, the military-installed Senate blocked the party from forming the government due to its intention to reform the monarchy.
