The Delhi High Court has asked the Centre to respond to a petition by the NGO Environics Trust challenging the cancellation of its registration under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). The HC asked the Centre to file a reply to the NGO’s petition within four weeks. The NGO claims that the cancellation order was passed without granting them a personal hearing. The Centre’s counsel argued that the petition is not maintainable as there is an alternative of appeal available to the NGO. The CBI has registered an FIR against Environics Trust for alleged violations of the FCRA. According to the CBI, Environics Trust had transferred money to bank accounts of people, which was intended for distribution among Amphan cyclone-affected people in Odisha, but was actually used for payments to protestors for an agitation in Odisha. The CBI has also mentioned the Trust’s alleged association with a arrested Adivasi activist.
