India must go 100% electric in two and three-wheelers by 2030: Amitabh Kant

India must go 100 per cent electric in two-wheelers and three-wheelers by 2030 and become a global EV manufacturing champion, according to Amitabh Kant, the G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog. He emphasised the urgency for India to transition its automotive sector towards electric mobility and declared the era of fossil fuel-based combustion engines as ‘dead’. Kant highlighted the significance of the automotive sector, which contributes 7% to India’s GDP, 35% to manufacturing GDP and 8% to total exports. India currently ranks as the third-largest global auto market and holds the position of the largest producer of three-wheelers, the second-largest manufacturer of two-wheelers and buses, and the fourth-largest producer of passenger cars. However, Kant stressed the necessity for India to lead the charge towards electric mobility and proposed an ambitious goal of achieving 100% electrification in two-wheelers and three-wheelers by 2030. He also emphasised the need for at least one million fast chargers in India by 2030, calling for the domestic manufacturing of these units instead of importing. Kant highlighted the importance of pushing localization content in manufacturing and building an interoperable fast-charging network. He stated that this is critical for providing impetus to the EV movement in India. The shift towards electric mobility represents more than just a technological transition; it embodies a paradigm shift in India’s industrial landscape. India aims not only to retain its current market share but also to expand its influence on the global stage.
