An 18-year-old woman waiting at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with her husband to catch a train to their hometown was molested by a food stall worker on Tuesday. The incident took place in the early hours of the morning, around 12:05 am. The woman and her husband had reached CSMT late Monday as their train was scheduled to leave at 6 am. They went to the main concourse and waited there until their train arrived.

At around 12:05 am, an unidentified man approached the couple and asked to see their tickets. He was wearing an identity tag, leading the couple to believe he was a railway official. The man, later identified as 29-year-old food stall worker Murarilal Gupta, advised the couple to move from the main concourse to the waiting rooms. The woman went to the women’s waiting room while her husband went to the men’s waiting room.

Gupta then asked the woman’s husband to get some snacks for him and his wife. Taking advantage of her husband’s absence, Gupta approached the woman and told her that she could no longer wait in the waiting room. He claimed that a checking procedure was taking place and asked her to accompany him to platform 18. Trusting him, the woman followed Gupta.

He took her to a desolate space beneath an escalator and began touching her inappropriately. Realizing the danger, the woman raised an alarm. Patrolling policemen heard her cries and rushed to her rescue. Gupta fled the scene, but the police were able to track him down using CCTV footage and the details provided by the woman.

A complaint was registered against Gupta under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code for molestation. The quick response from the police led to his arrest on the same day.
