Congress Claims Gujarat Assembly Speaker Canvassing for BJP, Seeks EC Action

The Congress on Friday approached the Election Commission seeking action against Gujarat assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary. They accused him of violating the model code of conduct by canvassing for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi, in a complaint dated April 11, claimed that a constitutional post holder cannot campaign for a political party. He sought immediate action against Chaudhary from the Election Commission. Doshi alleged that Chaudhary organised a meeting in support of Banaskantha Lok Sabha BJP candidate Rekha Chaudhary and provided video clips as evidence. He stated that as the speaker of the Gujarat legislative assembly, Chaudhary has no right to campaign for any political party or candidate. Doshi referred to the ‘Parliamentary Traditions and Procedures Part-1’ and stated that the moment a person becomes speaker, they become completely detached from political activities and do not belong to any political party. Doshi argued that Chaudhary violated the principles of Parliamentary Traditions and Procedure Part-1, Chapter-IX, and asked for immediate action to restrain him from participating in any political campaigning for the 2024 parliamentary elections. In response to these claims, Gujarat BJP media convener Yagnesh Dave stated that it is up to the Election Commission to make a decision on the complaint. Elections for all 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat will be held in the third phase on May 7 and votes will be counted on June 4.
