Nuradh Ram, a resident of Balori village, begins his day early, savoring the serene beauty of the hills and surrounding greenery. He enjoys a light breakfast and snacks on fruits throughout the day, indulging in tea with rusk in the afternoon and evening. Nuradh Ram’s son, Inder Dev Tulsi, shares his father’s enthusiasm for voting and recalls how a team of polling agents facilitated his vote during the last assembly elections. However, Nuradh Ram is determined to personally visit the polling station for the upcoming elections.
Piyar Singh, retired as a government teacher, actively participates in discussions about the elections, despite his limited auditory capabilities. Although he can only read bold captions in newspapers, he expresses his desire to cast his vote. Jatinder Kaur, Piyar Singh’s daughter-in-law, explains that he wakes up early, offers prayers, converses with family members, and enjoys a light lunch. Piyar Singh spends his time attempting to read books printed in bold letters and occasionally discussing the upcoming elections. While his mobility has declined over the years, his family ensures a comfortable routine for him.
Deepak Bhatia, president of the Chamba-based NGO Prerana The Inspiration, acknowledges their association with Nuradh Ram and Piyar Singh through various philanthropic initiatives. The organization applauds their valuable support and commitment to society by celebrating their birthdays. Deepak Bhatia emphasizes the importance of inspiring others, especially those who may be hesitant to vote, to fulfill their civic duty and participate in the democratic process.
The administration, represented by Deputy Commissioner Chamba Mukesh Repaswal, understands the significance of ensuring the participation of elderly voters. Teams of polling agents are sent to the homes of voters above 85 years of age, including Nuradh Ram and Piyar Singh, to assist them in the voting process.
