House Republicans’ Ukraine aid delay is ‘inexcusable’, says Yellen

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has strongly criticized Republican policymakers in the House of Representatives for delaying aid to Ukraine in its ongoing fight against Russia’s invasion. Speaking after a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal in Washington, Yellen emphasized the critical need for US assistance, highlighting its impact on Ukraine’s ability to combat the invasion and provide essential services. Yellen described the failure of House Republicans to act in support of Ukraine during this pivotal moment in the war as ‘inexcusable’ and detrimental to national security. Yellen made these remarks on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank’s spring meetings.

Shmygal underscored the importance of US financial support, stating that Russia was determined to undermine Ukraine’s economy. He expressed hope that aid, including direct financial support, would be unblocked. Currently, the Republican leader in the House has announced a vote on a major new military aid package that includes around $61 billion in long-delayed support for Ukraine. The vote is expected to take place on Saturday.

The far-right wing of the Republican party has been obstructing aid to Kyiv, as Ukraine faces ammunition shortages, under the influence of former President Donald Trump. President Joe Biden also urged Republicans to cease their opposition to the military aid package. Yellen warned that every moment of delay by House Republicans strengthens President Vladimir Putin and emboldens America’s adversaries worldwide.

Earlier in the day, Yellen and her counterparts from Japan and South Korea affirmed their commitment to using sanctions as a tool to impose costs on Russia for its war against Ukraine. They also aimed to target North Korea’s weapons program. The US Treasury condemned the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) exports to Russia and Russia’s procurement of DPRK’s ballistic missiles.

Jose Fernandez, the Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, expressed confidence that Congress would provide aid despite ongoing debates.
