Australian police have arrested seven individuals who posed an ‘unacceptable risk and threat’ to the public. The arrests were made in anti-terror raids involving more than 400 officers in Sydney. The individuals are linked to a 16-year-old suspect accused of stabbing an Assyrian Bishop. Deputy police commissioner Dave Hudson stated that the group adhered to a ‘religiously motivated extremist ideology’ and that it was ‘likely’ they could be planning an attack. Although no specific target has been identified, the police believe that an attack may be imminent. All the offenders are juveniles. Last week, the 16-year-old suspect attacked Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, resulting in a riot by followers of the Assyrian Christian church in western Sydney. The police quickly labeled the incident as a ‘terrorist’ act, leading to the involvement of a joint counter-terrorism task force. The area where the incident took place is home to Sydney’s small Christian Assyrian community, many of whom have fled persecution and war in Iraq and Syria.
