Coal production almost doubles but evacuation remains a challenge

Coal production in India has increased significantly in recent years, almost doubling from 565 million tonnes in 2013-2014 to 1.08 billion tonnes in 2019-2020. While this growth is commendable, the country still faces challenges in the evacuation of coal due to various reasons. One of the major issues is the lack of adequate transportation infrastructure and logistics facilities, causing delays and hindering the smooth movement of coal. Along with this, the involvement of private players, expansion of coal gasification projects, increased production of Coal Bed Methane (CBM), and better coordination between different stakeholders are crucial to address the challenges and improve the overall efficiency of coal production and evacuation in India. These steps will not only help in meeting the growing demand for coal but also contribute to reducing the dependency on imports and ensuring energy security.
