Northeast’s Largest Dairy Cooperative Clocks 28% Growth

The West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), popularly known as Purabi Dairy, achieved a remarkable growth of 28% during the 2023-24 fiscal year, with a turnover exceeding ₹262 crore. This growth was largely driven by the sale of milk, which accounted for ₹200 crore, representing a 20% increase compared to the previous year. Purabi Dairy has solidified its position as the largest dairy cooperative in the northeast region of India. The sales of other milk products, such as curd, ghee, paneer, and lassi, also witnessed a significant surge of around 35%.

Satya Brata Bose, the managing director of WAMUL, expressed his satisfaction with the exceptional growth and acknowledged the commitment of the team as well as the trust placed in the company by consumers and stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of supporting dairy farmers and promoting sustainable practices in Assam.

In recent years, Purabi Dairy has successfully expanded its market beyond its traditional areas in central Assam. The company has extended its operations to the Tinsukia district in the east and the Dhubri district in the west. The revival of the East Assam Milk Union Limited (EAMUL) under the Purabi umbrella has contributed to the business’s growth in eastern Assam. With the support of more than 900 dairy cooperative societies, EAMUL procures 80,000 liters of milk per day.

Bose attributed a significant part of the dairy’s growth to the Indian Army. The demand for fresh milk from the defense forces has been steadily increasing. This increased demand has provided a boost to Purabi Dairy’s revenue and overall growth.

Motivated by the success achieved so far, WAMUL has introduced new products to cater to consumer preferences. These include mango lassi, ice cream, flavored milk, and milk-based sweets, which have been well-received in the market. The company has set an ambitious turnover target of more than ₹350 crore for the current fiscal year.

In addition to focusing on financial goals, WAMUL remains committed to improving the livelihoods of dairy farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. This commitment is based on the belief that fostering the welfare of farmers and the environment is essential for long-term success and growth in the dairy industry.
