The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is taking measures to prepare hospitals for treating heat-related illnesses in the city. To facilitate treatment for heatstroke and other heat-related illness this summer, the GCC will erect signposts to direct patients to hospitals in all localities of Chennai. Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan mentioned that people with co-morbid conditions have been requested to seek medical assistance at the 140 urban primary health centres, health and wellness centres, and other hospitals of the Chennai Corporation. Oral rehydration solution has been provided at 188 locations in the city. Residents and visitors have been advised to avoid sun exposure from noon to 3 p.m. and avoid wearing black-colored clothes. Mr. Radhakrishnan also highlighted the importance of covering the head or wearing a turban when going out in extreme heat. He urged parents to prevent children from playing in the sun.

In addition to the preparations for heat ailments, Commissioner Radhakrishnan assured that all security measures have been put in place at counting centers for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Steps have been taken to ensure the safety of the centers in Chennai.

The Commissioner also stated that a fresh order regarding the flying of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is expected to be issued soon. This comes after an incident where a drone camera was spotted near a counting center in Kancheepuram last week. Officials have been instructed to stay on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents.
