The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), representing major telecom players like Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, has urged the Indian government to ban the sale of Wi-Fi 6E routers that utilize the 6GHz spectrum band. COAI’s Director General, SP Kochhar, emphasized the urgency of the matter in a letter to the Department of Telecom. According to PTI, COAI raised concerns over the sale of these routers through various e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Moglix, as well as offline traders.
The crux of the issue lies in the lack of policy decision by the government regarding the use of frequencies in the 6GHz band. As of now, the government has not provided clarity on the legality of Wi-Fi 6E routers operating in this frequency range. This regulatory ambiguity raises concerns about potential unauthorised transmissions and the legal liabilities that consumers may face.
COAI’s plea to the government highlights the need for decisive action to prevent further proliferation of these routers in the market. The industry body aims to safeguard both consumers and regulatory interests in the telecommunications sector by calling for a ban on their sale. Swift intervention from regulatory authorities is necessary to enforce a comprehensive ban on the sale of Wi-Fi 6E routers operating in the 6GHz spectrum band.
In response to COAI’s concerns, major e-commerce platforms have been approached. Some products have been removed following inquiries. However, the issue remains unresolved, emphasizing the urgency for regulatory authorities to intervene and enforce the ban.
Overall, COAI’s plea reflects the industry’s concerns over the potential risks associated with the sale of Wi-Fi 6E routers utilizing the 6GHz spectrum band. The need for a clear policy framework and consumer safety is emphasized to avoid any unauthorised transmissions and legal ramifications that consumers may unknowingly face. Regulatory authorities play a vital role in enforcing the ban and ensuring the protection of consumers and the integrity of the telecommunications sector.
