Income tax officials in Thrissur seized Rs 1 crore from the bank account of the CPM committee. The cash was withdrawn from an undisclosed account and CPM district secretary MM Varghese is under scrutiny for his involvement in the incident. IT officials had directed the CPM office-bearers not to spend the money and froze the account. The office-bearers wanted to redeposit the amount after receiving legal advice that it would help avoid mentioning it in the election expenditure statement. However, IT officials seized the cash when they came to the bank to discuss the redeposit. The CPM office-bearers were unable to explain the source of the money, leading to the seizure.
