A 52-year-old woman entrepreneur in Bengaluru is about to receive Rs 1.7 crore, out of the Rs 2.7 crore she lost to cybercrooks. The police managed to trace and freeze the miscreants’ bank accounts after the victim filed a complaint. This quick action of filing a police complaint has resulted in one of the highest sums being returned to a cybercrime victim in recent years. The victim responded to a link sent on her mobile and was lured into a scheme where she could earn money by recording likes for YouTube channels. The miscreants then convinced her to invest money promising double returns. The victim grew suspicious after seeing repeated messages of people claiming to have received double payments and realized it was a case of cybercrime. The police found the money in mule bank accounts and have obtained court permission to return Rs 1.7 crore in one installment. They have also traced another Rs 30 lakh, which will be returned after getting the court’s approval. Investigation into the rest of the money is ongoing. According to police data, cybercrime victims lost Rs 470 crore in the first nine months of 2023, and only 5.5% has been returned to the victims.
