The Calcutta High Court has stated that the investigation into the Sandeshkhali case is facing obstacles due to the lack of cooperation from the state authorities. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in its report, has mentioned the presence of vast volumes of land grabbing allegations. The court has directed the state to deploy additional staff to assist in the investigation. Additionally, the court has emphasized the importance of installing CCTV cameras and street lights as a measure to enhance security. Furthermore, the court has acknowledged the need to promote confidence among victims of sexual harassment and has sanctioned the deployment of a team of female CBI officers. The court has also called for immediate action and submission of the report on the progress of installing CCTV cameras and street lights. Failure to comply may result in contempt of court charges. The Calcutta High Court has pledged to closely monitor the investigation. The next hearing is scheduled for June 13.

In related news, the Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on the West Bengal government’s plea challenging the Calcutta High Court’s order for a CBI investigation into allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali. The court’s decision to investigate allegations against a private individual prompted the state government to file a plea against the CBI probe. The West Bengal government has approached the Supreme Court to contest the Calcutta High Court’s April 10 order. Following the High Court’s directive, the CBI has registered a First Information Report against five individuals and unidentified others involved in cases of land grabs and sexual crimes against women in Sandeshkhali.
