The State Highways Department in Coimbatore has been working on the construction of a flyover at Ukkadam since 2018. As part of this, a portion of the Ukkadam bus stand is being demolished to make way for a ramp for the flyover project. The up and down ramps on the Palakkad side are nearly complete, while the down ramp connecting to Pollachi road will be finished in around 10 days. However, the construction of the ramp connecting to the Sungam bypass will take more time. The demolishing work of the bus stand began a week ago and is expected to take some time. The entire project, which has cost ₹480 crores, has faced multiple delays and missed several deadlines. One portion of the flyover, from Big Bazaar Street to Karumbukadai junction, has already been completed, and it has been extended to cover Athupalam junction as well. The official also mentioned that a new bus stand for city buses will be constructed in Ukkadam. Coimbatore Consumer Cause has criticized the project for missing deadlines and violating road safety rules. They highlighted that the ramp leading to Palakkad road merges with the service road abruptly and that several flyover projects in Coimbatore are posing risks to motorists.
