Three Indian nationals have been arrested and charged in connection with the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader in Canada. Nijjar was shot dead by masked gunmen in a car park in a Vancouver suburb last June. The arrests have intensified a diplomatic dispute between Canada and India, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggesting that India’s government may have been involved. However, Delhi has denied any involvement. The arrested suspects, Karan Brar, Kamal Preet Singh, and Karan Preet Singh, have been living in Edmonton, Alberta. They have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Police have also stated that investigations are ongoing and that there may be additional arrests or charges. The Indian government has stated that it will wait for Canadian authorities to share information on those arrested. The victim, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was a vocal supporter of Khalistan, an independent Sikh homeland in the Punjab region of India. He was killed at a Sikh temple in Surrey, near Vancouver. The Sikh separatist movement originated in the 1970s and saw thousands of people killed in an insurgency before being quelled by the Indian government.
