Turkiye has taken the decision to halt all trade with Israel, according to Turkish officials. This move comes as tensions between the two countries continue to rise over the ongoing war in Gaza. Last month, Turkey had already imposed restrictions on certain exports to Israel. The suspension of trade has not been formally announced by Ankara, and it remains unclear when or under what conditions trade between the two countries will resume.
The trade between Turkey and Israel was valued at $6.8 billion in 2023, as per the Turkish statistical institute. The Israeli foreign minister, Israel Katz, criticized Turkey’s decision, calling it the action of a dictator and accusing Turkey of disregarding international trade agreements. This move by Turkey follows Colombia’s announcement that it is severing all diplomatic ties with Israel.
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro described the Israeli government as “genocidal” and cited this as the reason for cutting diplomatic relations. Colombia is the second South American nation to break off ties with Israel, following Bolivia’s decision in November due to the Gaza war. The Israeli government denounced Colombia’s move.
The conflict between Turkey, Colombia, and Israel highlights the growing tensions and disagreements between various nations over the situation in Gaza and Israel’s policies. These actions have led to strained relationships and could have significant consequences for future diplomatic relations and trade agreements.
