Some of the ancient buildings in Tamil Nadu, which are in derelict state, may get a new lease of life soon. The Public Works Department has submitted a project to renovate these neglected historic structures. The Building Centre and Conservation Division, a special wing formed to conserve heritage structures, is waiting for the State government’s approval on the detailed project report. Once approved, the division plans to start six renovation works worth nearly ₹67 crore within two months. The structures that will undergo renovation are the Kalyana Mahal chathiram in Thiruvaiyaru, Sivaji Rajah Bhonsle building in Thanjavur palace, Muthammal chathiram in Orathanadu, portion of Directorate of Boilers office in Chennai, Clock tower dome in Anna University, and Kodumudi travellers’ bungalow in Erode. The division had sought a consultant architect to study the condition of these structures and prepare the detailed project report. The Muthammal chathiram in Orathanadu was built in 1802 by King Serfoji II. It has suffered nearly 75%-80% damage due to ageing and is spread over 56,953 sq.ft. This chathiram served as a place for pilgrims and for promoting social welfare and women’s education. The Kalyana Mahal in Thiruvaiyaru, initially built as a queen’s chamber, was later used as a resting place. The ₹18 crore renovation project for this structure would be the first major one. The Kodumudi travellers’ bungalow, which has been unoccupied for a decade, and the clock tower dome in Anna University, which is 115 years old, will also be restored. Comprehensive repair work of the Indo-Saracenic building that housed the Directorate of Boilers in Chepauk will also be undertaken. The restoration process will involve restoring ornamental stucco works, old paintings, and temple art, and sourcing traditional construction materials. Traditional art conservators will be engaged for the works in Thanjavur district.
