West Bengal police registered an FIR against retired Calcutta HC judge and BJP’s Tamluk Lok Sabha seat candidate Abhijit Ganguly, along with party functionaries and workers, on charges including attempt to murder, defamation of women, and assault. The complaint was filed by the chief of the Trinamool primary teachers’ association, naming Ganguly and a BJP Yuva Morcha functionary. The charges fall under Section 307 IPC, which is a non-bailable offense.
Ganguly has dismissed the complaint, stating that it is a false case and that there are several such cases against him. He expressed confidence that the complainants would not be able to avoid the legal process. Ganguly also accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of trying to incite violence and claimed that people have understood their plans.
BJP sources have questioned the police’s decision to file such serious charges against a retired judge and alleged a conspiracy by the Trinamool Congress. The complainant, Maidul Islam, claimed that they were attacked following orders from Bengal BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari and Ganguly. However, BJP sources have contested these allegations and asserted that Ganguly was not present at the scene during the unrest.
