The Manipur Chief Minister, Biren Singh, announced that deputy commissioners are assessing the damage caused by a hailstorm in the state. According to Singh, around 15,425 properties have been severely damaged, and one person has tragically lost their life. The Centre has released Rs 6.9 Crore to assist the state, and more funds are expected to be allocated. Speaking to the media, Singh stated that the assessment includes damage to houses, livestock, and agriculture. The government intends to provide compensation to the affected individuals.

Additionally, Biren Singh mentioned the allocation of funds under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). Rs 6.9 Crore has been sanctioned under SDRF to aid in the relief efforts. The government has also started providing essential commodities and CGI sheets to the affected areas. The hailstorm has caused major damage in several districts, including Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Churachandpur.

To assist the affected families, the government has opened 42 relief camps. These camps aim to provide shelter and essential supplies to those affected by the hailstorm. The chief minister highlighted a significant surge in the demand for CGI sheets, which are essential for roofing purposes. Efforts are underway to ensure a sufficient supply of CGI sheets to meet the demand.

Th. Kirankumar, Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West District, issued an order addressing the sudden rise in demand for roofing materials, including CGI sheets. The order includes regulations to monitor the prices of roofing materials and ensure their availability at reasonable rates. The regulations will be in effect for one week, from May 6th, 2024, to May 13th, 2024. Wholesalers, retailers, and shops are required to remain open on all days, including holidays and Sundays. The rate of April 30th, 2024, or lower rates if possible, will be considered the market rate/price of the material. Bulk purchases by private parties are prohibited, and sales are restricted to hailstorm-affected families. Establishments are required to keep records of the sales made.
