Pakistan’s Supreme Court Suspends High Court Verdict Denying Reserved Seats to Imran Khan-backed Party
    Uncategorized

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has suspended the verdict of a high court that denied reserved seats to a political party aligned with former prime minister Imran Khan. The party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had formed an alliance with Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) to secure reserved seats in the national and provincial legislatures. However, the Election Commission of Pakistan ruled that SIC was ineligible for reserved seats and distributed them to other political parties. PTI and SIC challenged this decision in the Peshawar High Court, but the appeal was rejected. In response, SIC moved the Supreme Court, which has now suspended the Peshawar HC order. This suspension restores the reserved seats to PTI and SIC, and as a result, the ruling coalition government has lost its two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.
