Tata Motors’ Punch Becomes India’s Best-Selling Car Model, Outpacing Maruti

The most popular car in India is no longer a Maruti but a Tata. Tata’s ‘mini SUV’ Punch has become the largest-selling car model in the country, surpassing Maruti’s popular models like WagonR, Swift, and Brezza. In March 2024, Punch achieved this feat with total sales of 17,547 units, surpassing WagonR’s 16,368 units. Hyundai’s SUV Creta stood at the second position with 16,458 units. The trend continued in April, with Punch outselling WagonR again. This shift highlights the changing dynamics in the Indian car industry and the success of Tata Motors in recent years.

Over the past few years, Tata Motors has made a remarkable turnaround and emerged as the country’s third largest-selling car company, trailing Maruti and Hyundai. Models like Punch, Nexon, Tiago, and Altroz have played a significant role in Tata’s comeback. The sustained leadership position of Punch for two consecutive months indicates that this trend can be maintained. Tata’s success is further evident from the fact that it has surpassed Hyundai to secure the second position in some months. With its aggressive car launches and dominance in the electric vehicle space, many predict that Tata may become the second-largest seller.

Tata Punch offers petrol, CNG, and electric versions, with prices starting from Rs 6.1 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for petrol versions and above Rs 11 lakh for electric. Despite this milestone, Maruti still dominates the Indian market. In March, six out of the top 10 best-selling car models were from Maruti, and this number increased to seven in April. Maruti’s strong traction in the retail market, along with its ability to adjust production based on waiting periods for specific models, contributes to its continued success.

On the other hand, Tata is experiencing newfound confidence as its models gain greater acceptance in the market. The company is expanding its electric vehicle offerings and exploring the introduction of ‘born electric’ or pure green cars.
