State Election Commission Disqualifies Three Local Body Members

A municipal councillor, Nishakumari P., from Ward no. 10 of Paravur municipality in Kollam has been disqualified by the State Election Commission for taking up a contract work of the municipality in violation of the rules. Nishakumari had participated in the bids for printing the letterpads of the chairperson and councillors of the municipality, carried out the work, and accepted payment for it. However, elected municipal members are prohibited from accepting such work. Additionally, two grama panchayat members, Shalini Madhu from Ward 1 of Chembu grama panchayat in Kottayam, and Sulfikkar S. from Ward no. 12 of Punnapra South grama panchayat, have also been disqualified by the commission. They were disqualified for keeping away from the standing committee meetings of their respective panchayats for more than three months. Sulfikkar was also absent from the panchayat committee meetings for over three months. Their absences are in violation of the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act. The State Election Commission has rejected the petitions filed by the members for getting their memberships restored.
