The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the release of water from Vaigai dam to support the old ayacut areas in five districts. The Vaigai Dam (Water Resources Organisation) Assistant Executive Engineer has stated that a total of 915 mcft water would be released in phases.
According to the plan, the old ayacut area III in Ramanathapuram district will receive 915 mcft water for five days starting from May 10 to 14. The old ayacut area II in Sivaganga district will receive 376 mcft water for four days starting from May 16 to 19. In addition, Madurai district’s old ayacut area I will receive 209 mcft from May 21 to 26.
The release of water from the Vaigai dam will benefit the districts of Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram. However, the public has been cautioned to stay away from the river bed. It is also prohibited to allow cattle and milch animals near the river bed.
