US opens probe into Alphabet’s Waymo over performance of self-driving vehicles

US auto safety regulators said Tuesday that they are initiating an investigation into the performance of Alphabet’s Waymo self-driving vehicles. The investigation comes in response to reports of Waymo’s robotaxis displaying driving behavior that potentially violated traffic safety laws. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that it is conducting a preliminary evaluation of around 444 Waymo vehicles, following 22 incident reports, including 17 collisions. In certain instances, the automated driving systems in these vehicles appeared to disobey traffic control devices, leading to unexpected behavior and subsequent crashes.

The NHTSA’s investigation will assess the adequacy of Waymo’s autonomous driving technology and analyze the causes of the reported incidents. The agency will determine if there are any defects in the design or performance of the self-driving vehicles that could pose a risk to public safety.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, is one of the leading players in the autonomous vehicle industry. The company has been operating a commercial self-driving taxi service in Phoenix, Arizona, since 2018. Waymo’s vehicles utilize advanced sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence algorithms to navigate city streets without human intervention.

However, concerns about the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles continue to exist, even as companies like Waymo and Tesla push forward with their self-driving ambitions. While self-driving technology promises to improve road safety and transportation efficiency, incidents involving autonomous vehicles have raised questions about their readiness for widespread deployment.

The NHTSA’s investigation into Waymo’s self-driving vehicles will provide valuable insights into the challenges and potential risks associated with the technology. The findings may lead to regulatory actions and more stringent safety standards for autonomous vehicles in the future.

It is important to note that the initiation of an investigation does not necessarily imply wrongdoing on Waymo’s part. The NHTSA routinely investigates incidents involving vehicle safety and compliance with traffic laws to ensure the protection of public safety.

As the autonomous vehicle industry continues to develop and mature, it will face increased scrutiny and oversight from regulators. Achieving the vision of safe and reliable self-driving technology will require close collaboration between government agencies, industry stakeholders, and technology companies.
